Some of you may be able to catch tonight's Nightline on ABC. It is the
second part of the coverage on a woman blinded in last year's embassy
bombing.

   Nightline
   Friday, August 6, 1999
   Friday, August 6, 1999, 11:45 p.m. ET
Last night, we began telling the story of Ellen Bomer - a Commerce
Department employee blinded when the American Embassy in Nairobi,
Kenya was bombed last August. She compares her progress over the past
year to that of a boat - turning a corner, albeit slowly.
Tonight's broadcast centers on the annual National Federation for
the Blind convention - and the goals its members work to achieve. The
big goal - independence - is the centerpiece of conversation.
"We are tired of having our road to hell paved with other
people's good intentions," Barbara Pierce, an NFB spokesperson says.
"But the discrimination that we face is based on fear and lack of
understanding and imprecision in the way people react to us."
You don't hear the same anger in Ellen's voice-just a commitment
to live a fulfilling life in spite of her blindness. And Osama Bin
Laden, the man who allegedly ordered the bombing that caused her
blindness? "He isn't going to defeat me," she says, "and I know there
are just as many other Americans out there that feel the same way."

                                                          - Brad Phillips
