Catherine,
I'm very familiar with the Adblockplus addon and have the following
comments to offer.
First, let me say that I use it with Firefox, as Firefox is my browser
of choice. The addon definitely makes a difference and does a fabulous
job of hiding just about all of the ads you encounter on Web pages. In
fact, I've been so spoiled by it that when I went to another computer
which wasn't running it I felt surprised at the amount of ads I was
encountering that I forgot about due to how well the addon was working.
It does have many options, presented in a dialog which is accessible
with screen readers.
However, the addon for Internet Explorer is a slightly different story.
I would imagine that it should work as effectively as the Firefox addon
and so it is likely worth trying if IE is your preferred browser.
However, as of a while ago, I could find no way of actually accessing
the addon's dialog box in IE to do any type of configuring. Bear in mind
that I am using NVDA and JAWS may allow for a way to open the dialog,
due to the fact that JAWS has the capability of labeling graphics, a
feature not currently found in NVDA. Therefore, if you use IE as your
primary browser I would say that it is worth trying the Adblockplus
addon. You may find there is a way to access its options. Even if JAWS
has no real way of doing this, the addon will likely do what it was
designed to do and you should notice the results rather quickly. What I
really need to do is to contact the developer of this addon and suggest
a keyboard shortcut to access the addon's configuration dialogs in
Internet Explorer, assuming that the addon even has such dialogs in the
first place.
