A long time ago, I had read about a sort of backdoor method of getting an
icon onto the desktop but couldn't remember how.  Then, I thought it had
something to do the start menu and find files or folders.

So I went to the start menu;
pressed f find files and folders
typed in the name of the program
pressed enter

I went through the list until I found what I thought was the correct one
Pressed the context menu key
Got a message to the effect
windows cannot create a shortcut here; would you like it on the desktop?
I answered yes.

Then I went to the desktop and found
shortcut to (program).

Since I did not want the word shortcut I pressed f2 which allows one to edit
the name of the icon.  You could also press the context menu instead of f2
and go to rename.

I had to play around with it a bit but I found hitting the backspace a few
times and then typing in the name of the program, for example, outlook
express,
pressed enter.

The icon was then named what I wanted.

I say you have to play as sometimes I could get the edit box to display the
name of the icon but mostly it was silent so a couple of times I wound up
with double words.

I renmaed several icons and it works quite nicely.
