Education:

Must possess experience in assistive technology or have the ability to
learn.  A post secondary degree preferred.

 

Description:

The emphasis of this position is on matters pertaining to information
technology used by the agency's clients who use information technology
in local or wide area networks at job sites where adaptation or
modification of technology for compatibility with employers' data bases,
programming languages, and information systems in general is required.

 

Examples of Work:

Ability to develop and maintain working relationships with
business/employers to promote the hiring of blind individuals.  

 

Ability to gather data about a client's worksite and the technology that
the client will use on the job, and determine what is needed to
integrate non-visual access technology with technologies used at the
worksite.  

 

Ability to research possible solutions to problems involved with
integrating non-visual access technology into the worksite.  

 

Ability to develop, test, and implement scripts to improve the use of
screen access technology with programs used at the worksite.  

 

Ability to install, test, and configure hardware and software to
facilitate operation with speech, refreshable Braille, or screen
enlargement systems.    

 

Ability to provide on-site training and telephone assistance to our
consumers in the operation of mainstream computer programs with
non-visual access hardware and software.  

 

Ability to Troubleshoot technical problems at client worksites involving
the integration of non-visual access technology with other programs,
determine what repairs or upgrades may be necessary, and lead efforts to
implement needed hardware/software acquisitions or configuration
changes.




 

 

Position Requirements:

* Knowledge of assistive technology, including background in the use of,
CCTVs, screen magnifiers, screen readers, Braille translation software
and OCR software, preferred.

 

* Must provide assistive technology training for low vision and blind
consumers. 

 

* Must be able to troubleshoot closed-circuit TV's and computer problems
with large print and speech access. 

 

* Strong writing, speaking and public relations skills required. Must
have                 

the ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.

 

* Background in working with individuals with disabilities beneficial.

 

* Must possess the personal qualities necessary to work successfully
with employers and in a one-on-one training situation.

  

* Must complete training in script writing, within the first 12 months
of employment.

 

*Successful candidates for employment must be able to satisfactorily
pass a background screen.  All new hires will complete 15 weeks of
training at the Nebraska Training Center for the Blind (using blindfolds
if they have functional vision) to learn the alternative skills of
blindness (cane travel, Braille, assistive technology, activities of
daily living, etc.); those completing the training will have the option
of applying for certification as Vocational Rehabilitation  Counselors.
Work is performed under the direct supervision of a district supervisor.
Field assignments and travel are involved in varying degrees.
