I have Thunderbird to take me to the next message when I hit the delete
key, and I use the preview pane instead of opening a new tab or window
by pressing the enter key, so I'm not sure the following will work. I'm
also not sure where you've already looked or what you've already tried,
so I apologize if you've already tried the following.

In the Edit pull down, I bring up Preferences. Note this is on Linux,
and this may be in the Tools pulldown in Windows. In the Preferences
application I go to the Advanced options and over to the Reading and
Display page. Here you'll see a setting for "Close message window/tab on
delete". On my system this is unchecked. Try checking this and see if
you get the behavior you want.
