No doubt after at&t locks up the local telephone/cable market, they will
push hard, with other providers, to completely change the billing
services such that one would pay for bits of data sent. This instead of
a minute by minute rate based on distance, time of day, etc. Or they'd
would sell you "generous" packages which allow you to send so many
e-mails to this region of the world for this price, a different price
for a different region etc. Right now, as I understand it, much of the
information on the internet is sent via transmission systems separate
from the telephone industry in general. Perhaps someone can correct me,
but I do not think the back bone of the internet is exclusively at&t
lines.
