I have a Compaq also, and:
Often, the mike input doubles as the line input. in this case, sometimes
you need a resister cable, and sometimes not depending on the computer. The
manual should tell you. Another thing increasingly done is a USB port can
be selected as the line in source. Obviously the device must use a USB
cable as an output for this to work.
Another way you can go, and the one I've selected, I bought a outboard sound
card from Sound Blaster. They cost around $40, they tie into the computer
through a USB port, and the unit has both inputs and outputs of several
types including mini jacks, RCA stereo jacks, optical jacks. The device is
about 1x2x3 inches and has a headphone jack with volume control on it also.
Very handy.

Subject: [VICUG-L] Misleading properties.
Greetings,
I have recently acquired, a new Compak pc, model 6720s and it seems there is
nowadays commonly no line in facility but mic only. Yet, if I go into the
sound card properties and volume Etc. there are line in volumes and the like
and these can be switched thus muting the mic.
If there are no line in facilities, why does the system indicate their
presence?
