Sounds like you're talking about the quick filter bar, which you can 
also toggle on and off from the menu bar by going into View -> Toolbars. 
I'm using Thunderbird on Linux with Orca, and when I shift tab from my 
in box, I hear "Filter these messages Control+shift+k" and end up in  a 
straight edit field. Just start to type what you want to search for and 
the list of displayed messages will change as you type each character to 
just those messages that contain the string you're typing.
