I have seen many posts about JAWS users having problems with their
systems running slow. I am not a JAWS user but I am coming to the
conclusion that it is a resource hog <grin>. I had a problem like that a
few years back when I was using Super Vista for screen magnification. I
have been talking with one person about their resources problems with
JAWS and realized that I didn't know enough about JAWS to be of much
help. I contacted Freedom Scientific Tech Support about this problem and
below is their response. I hope that this isn't to complicated and also
hope that it can help someone. I keep a copy of this if anyone would
like me to email it to them.

From Freedom Scientific Tech Support:
JAWS and Windows 98 and (SE)

Thank you for contacting Freedom Scientific technical Support. Try
removing some items that are running on startup and in the system tray to
improve the resources. Once you do this, take the steps below to add
lines to the config.sys file as well as set the virtual memory and the
typical role of the system.

Take the steps below to add some lines to your config.sys file
1. Pull up the start menu (control+escape or windows logo key)
2. Press the letter r to activate the run dialog box
3.  type in:
notepad c:\config.sys
and hit enter

step 1: if these lines are not in the config.sys file, insert them at
the beginning of the file.

DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS
DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\EMM386.EXE NOEMS
DOS=HIGH,UMB

Step 2: If the lines below exist, make sure the number is at least the
outlined number specified in this email. If it is higher then the
number outline below, then leave the line alone. However, if these
lines don't exist, insert the following lines in the file.

files=70
buffers=50

step 3: If this line does not exist, insert this in the file.

stacks=9,256

4. Hold down the alt key and press the function key f4 to exit the file
5. You will be asked if you want to save the changes, press the letter
y and the changes will be complete for this portion of the settings.

Now, take the steps below to adjust your system performance. If you are
not comfortable with this, it is recommended you call our support team
or obtain knowledgeable help for assistance.

This can cause your system to malfunction and windows may not reload.
Freedom Scientific does not assume any responsibility for user errors
during these procedures.

1. Minimize all applications (windows logo key+m or insert+f6)
2. Press the letter m until you get to my computer
3. Hold down the alt key and press the enter key to enter system
properties
4. Hold down the control and shift key and press the tab key until you
get to the performance page
5. Press the tab key until you get to the
file system button
and hit enter
6. Change the typical role of the system to:
network server
and hit enter
7. Press the tab key until you get to
virtual memory
and hit enter
8. Arrow down to let me specify my own virtual memory
Note: If you have 128 mb of ram or less, multiply your mb by 2.5 to set
the minimum and maximum virtual memory.
for example:
if you have 64 mb of ram, you will set virtual memory to 160.
64 mb*2.5 = 160
128 mb of ram = 320
128 mb*2.5 = 320 mb of ram
---
If you have more than 128 mb of ram, you will double your ram
For example:
if you have 256 mb of ram, you will set your minimum and maximum virtual
memory to 512.
256 mb*2 = 512 mb
---
---
If you make a mistake on this part, your windows may not restart.
please be careful and make sure you set the minimum = to the maximum
memory as outlined above.

9. Tab to the minimum virtual memory and use the up and down arrows to
change it to xxx or just type in the correct number
caution: perform the read current line (insert+8)to make sure you
inserted the correct number
10. Tab to the maximum virtual memory and set to xxx also or just type
in the correct number
caution: perform the read current line (insert+8)to make sure you
inserted the correct number. At this point, you may want to shift+tab
to the minimum virtual memory to make sure it is equal to the number
inserted for the maximum virtual memory. If you okay this and your
minimum is higher than the maximum, your system will not restart.
11. Tab to the okay button and hit enter. You should be prompt to
restart the system choose yes
and hit enter

Once the system is back up and running, see if you are having the same
problems.
