You didn't say what version of Windows you are running or what
processor speed the lap top  runs, but:
It is most likely a combination of too little ram and/or too slow
a processor

Particularly if you are using "software speech" like eloquence,
or even worse Natural Voices, this is not nearly enough memory to
support these two memory and processor hungry applications.

these days a processor running over 500 MHz and at least 256 Mb of
memory is absolutely minimal for such doings.
