Thanks, all, for suggestions and commiseration. both are much appreciated.

Once I figure out what model my laptop is, I can try to find more 
specific information, but at this point, it sounds like I need to go 
into the bios to change a setting. The first step is to power on and 
press F10 right away before the system boots.

since the screen reader hasn't loaded yet, I'm assuming this process 
requires sighted assistance.

Is this true, or is there a way to use speech? for example, does 
Narrator work here?
