while this seems to be a boiler-plate response, i am forwarding it to the
lists in case anyone finds it of utility... i will continue to persue
this angle, although i think that anyone concerned about the health of
their service animals should avail themselves of the services being
offered by the new york city chapter of the american society for the
prevention of cruelty to animals (a.k.a. the ASPCA) - details about which
can be obtained by calling the ASPCA hotline at: 1 212 876 7700, extension
4700; in addition, mobile veterinary clinics have been established by the
ASPCA at the corner of Houston and West Streets and at Pier 40 (on the
west side, part of the Chelsea Piers complex)

Subject: RE: VMAT in NYC - assistance for service dogs?

American Veterinary Medical Association: Disaster Response Efforts

In the aftermath of the devastating destruction that took place on
9/11/01 in New York and Washington DC, the Veterinary Medical Assistance
Teams have been called into action to help in the rescue efforts.

On day 1, the VMAT-1 Team Leader was deployed to New York City to serve
on the National Disaster Medical System (NDMS) Management Support Team
(MST), an assessment team designed to evaluate the needs on the local
and state levels and to offer federal assistance to the state if the
state so requests.

Two members of VMAT-2 were deployed to serve on the NDMS MST in
Washington D.C., and the VMAT-2 Deputy Team Leader was called to serve
at the Maryland Emergency Management Agency.

As of 9/12/01 FEMA had issued the VMATs a mission statement through the
United States Public Health Service requesting their assistance on-site
in New York to support the search and rescue dogs and provide any needed
veterinary medical care during the disaster recovery efforts.

At this time VMAT-1 and some members of VMAT-2 are being deployed to New
York. For updates on this disaster response please visit
<http://www.avma.org/vmat/terrorist_attack.asp>. Due to the sensitivity
to security issues, no outside help is being requested. Two additional
VMAT teams are on stand-by to deploy if additional veterinary support is
needed.

In addition the United States Public Health Service posts situation
reports about all of their activations and deployments on their Web sit
at <http://www.oep-ndms.dhhs.gov/index.html>.

To learn more about VMAT and to get contact information to join a team

Thank you so much for your interest and support during this very
difficult time.

aloha - i'm contacting you as webmaster of the Visually Impaired
Computer
Users' Group of New York City (VICUG NYC) to inquire whether individuals
in
the NYC area who use service dogs (such as "seeing-eye"/guide dogs,
leader
dogs, hearing assistance dogs, etc.) will be able to avail themselves of
VMAT stations/services? i have been maintaining a resource page for our
members and interested parties at:
http://www.hicom.net/~oedipus/vicug/wtc_emergency_info.html
to which i would like to add at least a contact phone number for those
who
live in areas affected by soot/fallout

thank you very much for your attention to this urgent matter, gregory j.
