Here's a copy of the web page of the fifth grade e-mail project of the
Millcove school district. As they have been flooded with e-mail, causing
one computer to crash and school staff kept busy answering phones and
receiving letters, it is asked that no more e-mail be sent and that the
message not be forwarded any more. Currently, the project as described
earlier on the list has concluded. the school's announcement is below.

Grade 5 Email Project
Updated May 4, 1999
On Wednesday April 7, 1999, the Grade 5 class embarked on a whirlwind
adventure. We sent a letter to 15 people we knew, asking them to send
back their location, and to forward our letter on.
The response has been absolutely overwhelming! We received 9 000
messages within the first week alone. They were coming in at a rate of
about 150 per hour!! Our inbox was flooded, and our computer was
unable to handle the tremendous amount of Email.
It was at this point that the class decided to end the experiment
early. We are no longer ab;e to accept Email, however, if you sign our
guestbook your location will still be noted. We will also continue to
sort through our responses and update our results at this site.
The class would like to thank all those who responded....through
Email, "snail mail", FAXes, phone calls and Guestbook entries.
Everyone has been very kind, and the information we have received is
incredible and current!
Thanks also go out to our principal and secretary, who have been kept
busy answering phone calls and noting locations. We have also been
fortunate to have several volunteers who are helping us with reading,
and sorting through our responses.
This experiment has had many positive spinoffs. Besides integrating
Technology with the Social Studies and Language Arts programs in Grade
5, the students have:
- become more adept with keyboarding and webpage work
- read Email and discussed issues regarding the Internet (use of and
Safety)
- spelled, charted and mapped locations
- learned interesting facts and made conclusions
- done mathematical calculations, read graphs and created word
problems
- were interviewed for the newspaper
Below are some of the locations we have received messages from. Not
all are listed yet. We hope to have everything tabulated by June,
along with our conclusions (and hopefully a picture of our map!)
Again, many thanks to all participants. We hope we didn't
inconvenience anyone too much.
