I did a Google search on "wax file extension and came up with this:

File extension WAX description:
Windows Media Audio Redirector (.wax) files are Windows Media Metafiles that 
reference Windows Media Audio (.wma) files.
Mime: audio/x-ms-wax

Several web sites said the same thing.
