Valerie,
For what it's worth, I suspect Steve is correct in his analysis
of the problem.  that is, I use Lynx from a Unix shell account to
access www.google.com, and have found it to be the friendliest
search engine of all the several I have attempted!  In general  ,
I arrive right on the text entry field, insert my search terms,
move to the submit form prompt, and the results appear in the
next screen or two.

Got any specifics on what problems your friends are having?
