Maybe there's a very simple solution to the problem; it is one that I
implemented on a laptop that was used by a sighted as well as a blind
user.  I found a piece of paper that was exactly the size of the
touchpad and attached it with a piece of tape on one edge so the
sighted person could flip it up and the blind user (that was me) could
flip it down and cover the touchpad.  It worked well; no more
mistakenly touching the pad w my thumbs as I worked.
