Google.com/goog411 was no help at all. All it did was tell me I could
access the same helpful info on the screen of my mobile phone. I
really found calling the 800 number most helpful when trying to find a
business while I was on foot. Damn, I wish Google would reconsider!
There is always 1-800-FREE 411

Subject: [VICUG-L] Anyone know why the demise of GOOG 411?

Greetings,
For four or five years now, I've used GOOG-411 (800-4774-411) for all my

directory assistance needs. It's automated uses excellent voice
recognition
software, is almost always quick and accurate, and free.
The last few times I've called in, I've been greeted with the
announcement
that the service is going away November 11. Just wondered if anyone
here
knew why, or of an even sort of remotely equivalent service to replace
it.
Thanks,
Deborah
