NEW COMPUTER INTERFACE
Researchers at Carnegie Mellon University have developed a lightweight
device that enables computer users to virtually reach inside their computer
screens and manipulate simulated objects and environments. The system
eschews the bulky cables and wires common to many current haptic devices in
favor of a single, lightweight moving part that floats on a magnetic field.
Scientist Ralph Hollis says the system allows the user to actually feel the
force and torque of simulated objects on the screen, paving the way for a
new way to interact with computers, independent of the text, graphics and
sound that are common today. (Tampa Tribune 3 Jul 2000)
