  I've always had a lot of good luck with IBM/Lenovo laptops, especially 
the thinkpad series. You're paying a bit more, but they are durable and 
get good reviews. They don't come with a lot of crapware either. How 
portable does this laptop have to be? My son got a 17 inch laptop as a 
dekstop replacement, but the battery life sucks and it's awfully heavy. 
If you're actually going to be toting it around much, you may want to 
get a smaller screen size and a larger battery. I think you'll have a 
lot of success with any of the major brands though.
