Regarding chess games for Windows: Have you tried Gnuchess or K-Chess
Elite? I use JFW and I was able to play against these games, but the
access wasn't great. On neither game could I set up the board for
problems. I could play whole games, though.

To be fair, I did have to write a little code in JFW for both games to
make the voicing automatic.
