OPINION: Accessibility Improvements Just The Start For E-Biz

As L. Scott Tillett reported in last week's InternetWeek, the
government is forcing businesses to address ergonomics and
accassibility, requiring its suppliers to provide IT products that are
accessible to handicapped users. That means, for example, that
computers must be able to support voice recognition as well as
text-to-speech. They must support a variety of pointing devices
besides mice. There must be ways to enter text that doesn't require
typing.

At first glance, it doesn't seem that government procurement
requirements will affect the IT departments of companies that aren't
directly involved with the government. But they will. The federal
government is one of the biggest buyers of IT products on earth; in
many cases, its specifications are reflected in products sold
elsewhere.
