Hi, fellow listers:

I'm running windows ME on a 700MHz pentium machine with a 30GB hard drive.
Screen reader is JAWS 4.0. For the past few days, I've been attempting to
run scandisk, but it constantly stops and starts again from the beginning.
After this wonderful scenario plays itself out for the tenth time, I'm
enfranchised with the knowledge that other programs may be writing to the
hard drive, and I'm asked whether I wish to continue receiving this edifying
message. I've closed down all programs, including JAWS...Norton anti-virus
disabled, and no programs running out of the system tray. In short, there's
nothing else left to close down or render inoperable. Someone told me that
they have a vague memory about scandisk not working on a hard drive as large
as 30GB. This may be an academic matter because I ultimately went to the
"maintenance" wizzard, which perportedly (or apparently) scanned my disk for
errors and also defragmented the drive, thereby accomplishing the tasks I
ultimately wished to have performed. Nevertheless, I would welcome any info
respecting whether scandisk can be used on a 30GB hard drive, and if so, any
thoughts about why it doesn't work on my system.

Thanks for any feedback!

John McCann
