I believe that the statement "metabolically" means rapid uptake in the blood
and consequent insulin release.  Sugar presumably means table sugar.  I'm
unaware of sugar company propaganda, but I am aware of a certain fear of
sugar in some circles.

In terms of uptake and energy value and ability to cause the release of
insulin, the various sugars are "about" the same save for fructose, which
does not stimulate insulin release, nor is it converted to glucose or any
sugar which converts to glucose.  Table sugar is sucrose which is a covalent
combination of fructose and glucose which rapidly forms free fructose and
free glucose after ingestion, the 50% glucose portion of which stimulates
insulin release.   The common sugars used for sweetening are all natural
products.  In the process of making table sugar or sucrose by extraction
from sugar cane or sugar beets, a crystalization process takes place which
produces the final table product.  Cooked starch products such as brown and
white wheat, brown and white or yellow rice, potatoes, tapioca root, etc.
all contain starch which is a polymer of glucose which rapidly breaks down
after ingestion to produce glucose which causes insulin release.  The many
sources of glucose, no matter what their source, no matter if their
precursors are sweet or not, all cause insulin release.

The so called "natural" sugars (really all of them are natural) seem to
refer to colored sweet liquids, which presumably would exclude molasses, as
this is a byproduct of table sugar processing, hence is a "processed"
substance itself.  Even maple syrup is processed in that maple sap is made
into syrup by a processing concentration step which involves cooking.  The
small concentrations of flavors in these colored sweet liquids give them
their uniquedelicious  flavors
