Some of you might find this interesting. The MMWR (Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report) from the week of April 8 had a story titled Thyrotoxicosis After Consumption of Dietary Supplements Purchased Through the Internet.

Basically, a woman was admitted to the hospital confused and unable to recognize family members and repeating herself. She was found to have quite elevated blood levels of thyroxine and triiodothyronine. It turned out that she had bought a "diet pill" that contained 25 mcg triiodothyronine only two weeks earlier and had doubled her dosage a week earlier! In the two weeks, she had taken 25 of the pills.

You can read the article at http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/65/wr/mm6513a4.htm

I wouldn't have thought that you could even get thyroid hormones without a prescription.
