Subject: Fw: thyroid & adrenal proplems

Hi from my new address on the south coast of South Africa.

I have not written in to the list for about a year. To update - we sold our
guest house and have relocated and are working on new business plans. Seems
we traded one set of the stresses for another! A year ago, using Wilson's
with a helpful GP, I got my body temp up a full degree ( from an average of
35.3 to 36.3 centigrade), I was feeling better and with all the massive
life' changes, weaned myself off everything and just dealt with ups and
downs as they came. That was a year ago. The last few month's there have
been a few family tragedies. I personally deal best with anxiety/depression
my faith and prayer, but the more severe tiredness, worse than usual muscle
aches in legs ( have had a few back fusions so in general I cope with that
permanently ) but my biggest nightmare - keeping my weight stable was back.
I have never lost the 20 pounds I gained when my thyroid 'crashed' 3 years
ago despite more or less following a healthy low GI diet. So I had blood
tests done and found I am still hypothyroid - not too drastic - but I was
put back on 1mg Eltroxin (synthroid). Symptoms seemed better but then crept
back. I increased to 1mg twice a day. Still felt 'wrong'. I was dreading the
whole T3 / T4 story because, here in South Africa - not only do you deal
with doctors and specialists who do not listen to the clinical symptons, but
our medical options are very limited - our government healthcare is 3rd
world for the general population - and we personally can afford only health
insurance that covers hospital expenses. So to start the whole procedure of
visits and costs are not really an option.

On doing some more reading, I decided an adrenal test may be a good place to
start. Did some reading in the archives so I could go armed with some info
Lo and behold!!!! the doctor did a check on the thyroid ( it is 4 months
since I started Eltroxin ) and a cortisol test. The results came back to do
some more tests because of the very high levels - check for early Cushings
Had another test and now wait for results.

Now for some info and advise please.

I had thought adrenal INSUFFICIENCY caused thyroid meds to not always be
100% effective - and weight gain. Can someone put me in the picture. I
gather adrenals have a 'range' - similar to thyroid - from under to
overactive. Is Cushings then extreme overactive and the range drop to the
other side of the scale to an extreme of Addisons. Do both extreme levels
affect thyroid function and its treatment. If my blood levels are at the
high level requiring more tests for Cushings ( I obviously need to not jump
the gun and wait for the next results ) can this be like the thyroid
nightmare of clinical vs lab results. I will come back with feedback next
week with new test reults. But can anyone give some more advise - being
personally pre-armed with info seems a necessity.

Glad you are all still around. I never stopped with the list - even while
off treatment - and it is definately the answer when living with treatment!

Regards to you all

Lynette
