Dr. Melfi's Flaws

January 2, 2002

To the Editor:

I am concerned that an assemblage of psychoanalysts, in
honoring the fictional Dr. Jennifer Melfi (Tony Soprano's
therapist), creates the impression of professional
endorsement of the psychotherapeutic persona that Dr. Melfi
embodies (Arts & Ideas pages, Dec. 29).

In fact, many who practice psychoanalysis would take issue
with aspects of Dr. Melfi's clinical technique, including
her looseness in professional boundaries and
confidentiality, and her use of psychoactive medication.

One would hope that a professional association of
psychoanalysts would turn its efforts toward helping to
distinguish between fantasy and reality and educating the
public about the true nature of the psychoanalytic process.
