MA in Psychoanalytic Studies by Distance Learning 2004/5

Psychoanalytic Studies has emerged over the past 20 years as a
challenging and exciting field of academic research. The 2 year
part-time MA in Psychoanalytic Studies by Distance Learning at the
University of Sheffield, is committed to providing a theoretically
pluralistic course, which encourages students to explore issues of
psychoanalytic theory and practice, as well as addressing the diverse
uses and influences of psychoanalysis in a systematic and rigorous
manner. The course examines the theory and practice of
psychoanalysis in its relation to individuals, groups and
organisations; providing a firm foundation in Freudian, Kleinian and
Object Relations, and Lacanian theory, as well as an introduction to
the work of Jung. All psychoanalytic theory components of the course
are taught by practising analysts and therapists from within the
respective schools of psychoanalysis.

Psychoanalytic Studies is an inter-disciplinary course and the
exploration of psychoanalysis as a cultural and social discourse is a
core component of this programme. This innovative MA programme is
unique in bringing together experts from the fields of literary
studies and social and cultural theory, to critically interrogate the
dissemination of psychoanalysis through cultural and social
discourse. Through the analysis of cultural texts, social processes
and institutions such as politics, education, religion and war,
contemporary cultural issues based on the social indices of
difference are addressed, using psychoanalytic approaches to
questions of language, representation and subjectivity.
