Charlotte,

First I would have her repair her current installation.
Click START -- SETTINGS -- ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS
then scroll down the list to find MSIE.  Double click it (or use
the ADD/REMOVE button) and then select the option to
REPAIR the current installation.

If that does not work, then try completely reinstalling IE 5.

As a last resort (shudder, cringe) upgrade to IE 5.5.
