I experienced an identical problem when attempting to view the .pdf user's
manual
files for Ahead Nero Burning Rom after installing the program on a Gateway
PIII 650, 256 RAM, Windows 98SE computer. I, too, had upgraded the
Acrobat Reader previously to version 6. I was able to view all the
documentation
by starting the reader first, then using File -> Open to navigate to the
documents
in question, then opening them. After doing this one time, all pdf files
will now
open and display correctly. All I can surmise is that something in the
file
associations or the registry doesn't work quite the same way with/for the
Acrobat Reader v. 6 as with earlier versions.

Try this, and I hope it works for you as it did for me.
