Gail,
Part of your question said: "my Dell Dimension 4300S will not get past an error message to boot up. The message reads "LuCallbackproxy.exe Application Error" on thetop and then it says "The application failed to initialize properly"
The application you referred to which is somehow blocking your boot is a Symantec (Norton) ap. Personally, I don't think Norton's high rating is worth the problems it causes. Do you have Norton installed? If so, or even if not!--maybe call them to see if they can help. Here is the page which describes the application (not much, though).
http://www.fileresearchcenter.com/L/LUCALLBACKPROXY.EXE-6781.html
We have been using Kaspersky for several years without problems, and also, when you email or call you get a response from a REAL person who actually knows what is going on....not a 10 page form email that doesn't even address the problem (actually, that is McAfee's thing,in my experience). You can find Kaspersky at http://www.useice.com
Good luck--
