PCSOFT Digest - 6 Jan 2005 to 7 Jan 2005 (#2005-7)i'm trying to fix a problem my mother (80 year old on the other side of the ocean) is having: she was working on a word document and when she tried to save it she says she couldn't because it kept telling her it was a read only document. meantime the page cursor had stopped working and she couldn't type any more into the document.
i got her to save it to desktop as .rtf and then when she right-clicked it and tried to send it to me, again she was unable to type into the e-mail window to send it.
she then turned the computer off (it is a month old HP pavilion 710, Windows XP) and on restarting it she finds the wrong programs open when she clicks the desktop icons.
to avoid further desperation i have told her to turn it off and leave it for the time being.
does anyone have any idea of what the problem might be? a virus? (she updates mcafee virus scan regularly)
is there any default setting she can return to?
any help would be gratefully accepted!
