The Outlook help file seems to suggest that some items are deleted based
on the archive date chosen, but my archive file contains all items, so
I'm not sure what this means. Take a look at the help file and it may
make more sense to you than it does to me.
MS has a backup program for Outlook that works automatically, but
doesn't seem to get much publicity:
