I have settled on Audacity - a free program released under public license:

It is not the easiest to learn, but it is worth leaning because it does so much.

I’m needing a recommendation on audio editing software.  I’m needing to record a play and be able to add sound effects in behind.  Also I’ve been doing picture slide shows with music in the background.  I’ve been using windows movie maker but would like something with a little more ‘wow’.  Any recommendations?
