Hi Sissy,

One point to keep in mind when considering a free version versus a paid
version is that in most cases the free one will protect you just as well as
the paid version. It just won't have all the bells and whistles and extra
features, which you probably don't need, that the paid version has.

Most retail versions online have a trial period where you can try it to see
how you like it. Many venders also offer suites with names like "Internet
Security" which are collections of various programs that do many things.
It's generally advisable to stay away from those and stick to individual
programs designed for a specific purpose.

For a firewall, ZoneAlarm (free or Pro) is considered by many to be the
best. I've used both the free and the Pro version for years. As for an
anti-virus program, AVG is probably the best choice for the novice because
it's easy to install and set up. avast! is also a very good choice for a
free program.

Retail versions can often be found at a good price on sale and with rebates
at places like BestBuy, CompUSA and Circuit City (USA). OEM versions can be
found at great prices also. Here are two sites:

ZoneAlarm (Free)

Sygate Personal Firewall (Free for personal use)

Oh, one other thing. If you don't have Service Pack 2 for XP installed, I
recommend you get it. It's mostly about security. Since it's release there
are updates for it too, so visit Microsoft or Windows Update for those.

Subject: [PCSOFT] Virus & Firewall protection

Hello! Recently someone on this list said they couldn't recommend
Symantec products for protection. What virus and firewall protection
would you recommend and where would a person find it? I run Windows XP
Home Edition.

Thanks for your help!

Sissy
