Yes, absolutely. All they are is a certain extension used
when the page is running server side includes. It
(the extension) indicates to the web server that it should
look for an SSI and serve it up.

I'm not sure what you mean. There is no need to change any default
anywhere. Your browser (either one) will automatically display the
page when it encounters it.
