I deal with FA311 card a lot. as far as I can tell, it has highest failure
rate than anyother network cards I've even seen. It is very possible that
you just got unlucky enough. Also, FA311 is very PCI slot dependent,
sometime you will see strange system problems (eg. no post, cpu/ram error,
no video beep ...) just because FA311 wasn't in right slot, so it is very
good idea to move it to different PCT slot around. I couldn't remember
exact model, but there are a few mobo that won't work with FA311 card at
all.

FA311 isn't a bad card, it's cheap, it's fast and widely compatible with
OSes, the only issue is to get it work at the first place (which should be
fine, but can be very tricky sometimes).

ghz, 512 MB RAM home build. I have a NetGear FA 311 Fast Ethernet Adapter.
However, the icon in the system tray has a red "X" on it and when I open it
says Network cable unplugged.
