Actually it is the CMOS settings that are being lost. The BIOS is in ROM and
does not need power. A small battery is used to keep the information in the
CMOS RAM. This is usually a Lithium battery which theoretically lasts for 10
years, but usually fails after 2 to 5 years. Some batteries are soldered
into the motherboard and require a technician, others are in a socket on the
motherboard, and still other installations use a battery pack which is
connected to the motherboard via a small cable. If your computer has such a
battery pack, it is possible that the wire got loose. Check it our - read
your manual to see what configuration you have.
