Hi Mick,
Just check you audio cable that goes from your CD-Writer to your sound card.
That may be the problem. If it is a "cheap" cable, or if there is a lot of
dust in your sockets, that may cause a "whistle" sound. If not, then it
should be your sound card.
I am using the HP SureStore 6020ep and I have read in the user manual that a
cheap cable or a dirty socket COULD do this.
