Destroying the drive seems to be the safest if not the only
safe suggestion. After removing the platter(s) from the
drive does any info remain in the electronics (cache etc)?
What are the platters made of? How would one destroy the
platters themselves - burning, magnetically, with an abrasive,
all of he above, or other method?

Remember, just because you're not paranoid,
doesn't mean there's no one following you :)
