Many thanks for your reply which put me on the right track.  As I tried to
answer each of your questions

Dead Center.
> If you maximise a window, is it still visible?
Yes
> If you click on it with the left or right mouse buttons, does anything
 happen? Any popup menus?
Yes, as I tried to move it, I was able to move it and as I right
clicked on it and looked at the drop down menu, I saw that it was "viewed
as a Web page".  Then when I looked at customize and appearance, I saw that
I had some
backgound other than "None" checked.  When I checked "none," and OK, it
disappeared!
