Diane,

Access comes with Office 2000 Professional Edition.  If you have Excel
and Word but not Access then you probably have the Standard Edition.

Yes, Access is a Database Management System and is fairly easy to learn
with a lot of the more difficult to learn SQL statements being made
behind the scenes while the user is using a GUI with drag and drop, etc.

Access is powerful enough for all but the bigtime corporate databases
where they usually go with Oracle or DB2 or somesuch.  Being part of the
Office Suite, Access is quite well  integrated with Word and Excel.
