That is typically the representation of an image. The sender might have
embedded a JPG or GIF file in the email, or embedded HTML that points to
same on the web. If the email client can't draw the picture for some reason,
it will put a box around the area where it belongs with a little red X in
it.

It could be something else, but that's my bed. There isn't really anything
you can do about it. Some email clients will ask if you want to download the
images (Outlook does, but I'm not sure about Outlook Express or other
clients). You might be able to configure your client so that all emails are
read in plain text. That way maybe the mime code will not attempt to load
any of the images or HTML. I've never tried it so you might have to
experiment.
