I have IE 6 sp1 and a bunch of updates (according to the "about" dropdown).
I regularly update through windowsupdate. However, one of those updates
changed IE6 and made it impossible for me to get past the logon screen on most
sites.

This problem is documented at microsoft.com and gives a fix, #831167.
However, in the list of updates on the dropdown box it lists that file. I
downloaded the file separately and tried to install through add/remove but
then I get a
box that says I need IE6 sp1 to install. I do have IE6 sp1. I can't logon
to simple sites like ebay, yahoo, or my internet banking sites through IE. It
is successful if I go through AOL though.

I'm thinking I need to uninstall then reinstall IE6. I haven't done that
before and thought IE was intricately intertwined with the XP OS.

Is there a better way than uninstall/reinstall? If I have to reinstall, how
do I go about it without causing damage to the system? Will I lose my mail
settings and mail in Outlook?
The comp is 2.4Ghz 512MB ram running WinXPsp1. There are four users for this
comp: 2 limited accounts and 2 admin. I just checked on the other three
accounts and IE6 accesses logon sites without a problem. The problem only occurs
on my admin account. Does that help narrow the problem?

TIA,
Kevin Nowicki
