No-one responded to my post - apparently nobody else has had the problem.

No matter - I found the solution myself.  Seems like the language pack which enables IE to correctly identify and display foreign characters is actually on the XPProSR-1 CD, in the i386 folder.

I think perhaps I ought to copy the XP install CD to the HDD to prevent this happening again - would someone kindly refresh my memory regarding the registry hack which alters the installation source?

  I got the impression that a folder containing language packs had already been loaded when I installed SP-1, but I hadn't actually done this as a separate action, as my XP Pro has SP-1 built-in.

  In the finish I flagged the Chinese language pack.  After I'd finished on the net, I went looking for a folder named 'lang' but I'm durned if I can find anything like it.

  Anyone have a clue on this issue?
