Mark,

You can always use perl, if the option is available on your website.
Contact the sysadmin to see if it is, and the path to it.
Then a visit to Matt Wright's site is in order, to find the website
stat and counter program you like. This is the one located at:
http://cgi.resourceindex.com/Programs_and_Scripts/
There are many many freeware scripts out there that will do exactly
as you like. One also does not need to know PERL to use the scripts,
most have excellent directions for installation. However, you do need
to know the path to PERL on your server, and how to correctly set
permissions. If you're using WS_FTP, or Cute FTP, both allow you to
to do this.
If you run into any problems, feel free to contact me privately and
I'll try to help.
