My understanding is Norton releases new defs almost everyday but
Liveupdate is updated Wednesdays UNLESS there is a major new virus.
You can always download and install the new defs when they are
released.

Anne,
I believe the answer is because Norton AV's "definitions are
up-to-date"
message is determined by internal hard-coded program logic, i.e. AV
checks
whether it has been less than "x" days (I think 7) since the last
definitions update or more, and displays a status accordingly. The
program
doesw NOT check on-line before displaying the update status
message.
Symantec, however, updates their available virus definitions as
soon as a
new set is available, which is sometimes more frequently than the
"x" days
built into the program.
