McAfee is good but you have to pay for it. AVG is just as good for all
practical purposes but it's free for the antivirus version---it costs if
you want the antispyware as well.

You can read numerous reports and tests on the various programs, all of
which will report different results depending on how they test. McAfee
generally comes out pretty well, though some versions tend to be overly
intrusive and may slow general performance on some computers. I don't know
whether the latest version has fixed that.

AVG is as good as any, -------my guess is that probably 60-70% of the
world's home computers use it.

Your best line of defence, by far, as to get a good ISP with good a-v
protection. Then your internal a-v program needs only to be a second line
of defence in the highly unlikely event of something slipping through your
ISP's protection---or unless you open something internally, say off a
friend's infected floppy.

AVG will protect against emails as well as web browsing.

If you're in a high-risk multi-user commercial environment, Nortons or
McAfee is probably best. But for the average single-user home computer, AVG
or Avast are quite sufficient.

In 5 years of intensive browsing, and using a good ISP, I've never even
seen a virus alert.
