That could get rid of some or maybe all of the offending entries.
But as Siva said, the software has been removed,  now all that
is left are the "open with" remnants--- which don't tell you the
file extension.

The only recourse at this point is to go through the entire list
of file associations.........
How many programs does he currently have on his machine?
How many programs were improperly removed?
How many file extensions are registered?
This could end up being a rather long list and
a very lengthy process.

An uninstaller can complete the whole task in less than a minute.

AND... since the "open with" associations were "left behind"
there are probably many other dead/orphaned registry keys
lurking about which have nothing to do with file associations.
