Hello Al,

What you suggest is exactly that which I have in mind, but the problem is that in OE 5, when I right-click the selected message, the pop-up box does not contain the option to 'save attachments'. Only when I open this message (wither in a preview pane or in a new window), the attachment-section shows the name of the attachment and if I right-click it, the pop-up box contains the option to 'save attachment'. So, you see, even to see the name of the attachment, I have to open the message, which I find highly unsettling.

Any ideas ?

Another lister, Mary, did suggest viewing mails online before downloading them. Well, I do have a program which allows me to selectively view headers/mails before downloading them. Though this isn't really equivalent to what I wish to accomplish, because it gives me no idea of the content of the attachment, just displays its name.

Shaleen,

Here's what I do with all email attachments. With the message selected (just high-lighted) choose 'File - >
Save attachments'. At this point you should see the name of the file that is to be saved, and you can choose
to cancel. If you proceed, save the attachment(s) to your quarantine folder of choice, then scan that folder
with your VS program before even looking in the folder. I have used this method for years, and with the
exception of a Trojan virus in a program named Joke.exe, (which waited months before executing) have had no
known infections. hth
