It soundls like you inadvertantly modified the normal.dot file.  Open Word,
Select File, Open, then select templates as opposed to word files as the
file type.

Drill down through the open dialog box until you find the templates folder
for the MS Office 97 install [probably in C:\program files\Microsoft Office
97].

Select the normal.dot file and open it.  This is your default file.  Every
document you start will begin with this as a blank file.  You can change the
font etc.

When you are done, save the file as normal.dot [save as a template].  You
should then be back to "normal".
